Sessions:
January 25th: Small Fruits and Berries
Learn how to care for small fruits like strawberries, raspberries and gooseberries! We’ll cover preferred cultivars, maintenance calendars, and propagation strategies. Small fruits and berries are some of the easiest fruit to grow and a great way to integrate perennials into your garden.
February 1st: Pests/Diseases
In this class, we’ll cover some of the pests and diseases that are most common in fruit trees. Fruit trees are susceptible to many problems, so learning how to recognize and prevent issues is very important! We’ll also cover Integrated Pest Management and different ways of controlling issues in your orchard.
February 8th: Holistic Sprays
Growing fruit organically is tough! We’ll learn how to integrate holistic sprays that do not damage the environment into our orchard care. We’ll also cover how to read a pesticide label and understand application rules.
February 15th: Pruning
Pruning is one of the most important aspects of keeping your fruit trees happy and healthy! In this class, we’ll discuss the principles of dormant fruit tree pruning. Weather permitting, we’ll go outside to practice on some real life trees.
February 22nd: Grapes
Fresh grapes are unparalleled! In this session, we’ll talk about how grapes grow, how to care for them, and how to prune them. Weather permitting, we’ll go outside to prune the grapes at Unity Gardens and observe their growth patterns.
March 1st: Permaculture & Biodiversity in the Orchard
No fruit tree is an island! A biodiverse orchard includes companion plants that deter pests, attract pollinators, serve as living mulch, and maybe add other edible options to your space. In this class, we’ll talk about what companion plants you can integrate into your orchard to add beauty, food, and ecosystem services!
