Garden 101

Join our free class series on gardening basics! The same topic will be taught twice a week on Wednesdays 6-7pm and Saturdays 10-11am at our Welcome Center on 3701 Prast Blvd, South Bend, IN 46628 but offered on zoom as well. After the series, recorded sessions will also be available on YouTube.

Garden Planning (January 8th and 11th)
 Insight on how to plan a garden, things to consider, how to pick a location, planting, irrigation, ect.

Soil Health (January 15th and 18th)
In this class we will explore the importance of soil health. We will discuss soil micro bacteria and organic matter. I also hope to touch on the history of poor soil health in the United States (dust bowl) as well as the programs in place and best management practices used in agriculture to protect soil health and reduce erosion.

Composting (January 22nd and 25th)
This class will focus on the basic principals of composting. We will explore the benefits of composting food waste to reduce waste, as well as for garden health. Class members will be informed about proper composting techniques, best management practices, and equipment options.

Seed Starting  ( January 29th and February 1st)
This class will focus on sharing the basic principles of seed starting for beginners, as well as providing examples of different tools, trays, and techniques.

Transplanting Seedlings (February 5th and 8th)
This class will focus on the basic principles of transplanting seedlings, and will cover some of the species specific needs for common plants such as tomatoes, peppers, and squash. We can discuss hardening off, and the best method for protecting transplants from a frost. Planting calendar will be provided.

Garden Maintenance (February 12th and15th)
In this class we will be teaching how to keep a well maintained garden. Topics of discussion will include weeding, clearing debris, checking for pests and disease, and how to properly irrigate.

Companion Planting (February 19th and 22nd)
In this class we will review the benefits of companion planting. I hope to include info about what plants do best together, as well as which plant pairings should be avoided.

Successional Planting (February 26th and March 1st)
In this class we will discuss the basic concept behind succession gardening, and provide information on how to maximize yield in your growing space.

Container and Small Space Gardening (March 5th and 8th)
This class will focus on small space gardening principles, and aim to teach methods on how to maximize yield from small areas. Container gardening will be discussed, with special interest in apartment living
Pest in the Garden (March 12th and 22nd)
In this class we will review common garden pests and tips for organic management
