Unity Gardens Classes are all free and open to anyone. Classes normally last 60 to 90 min. We host most classes at our Welcome Center on 3701 Prast Boulevard, but also in other spaces in the area. Watch here.

Wild Ones Conservation Series |

Taught by Jan McGowan, Wild Ones Member Mar. 19th: How Native Plants Bring Life to the Landscape Join us in defining what native plants are; how they are a win-win for gardeners and land managers; why they are essential for supporting biodiversity, soil health and our climate; how beautiful they are; and lastly, a brief bit on how people can find them and learn more. Mar. 26th:Lawns, Birds, Butterflies, and Bees This half-hour presentation highlights the problems presented by America’s love affair with lawns. Discover how to reverse the trend and how doing so with native plants will bring life and beauty to your yard. Apr. 2nd: The Buzz on Pollinator Habitats We have all heard that insects, including the pollinators, are in decline. This presentation goes beyond bees and butterflies to describe the many types of insects that provide this valuable service. Learn that a few changes to how we manage our land and gardens can help reverse the trend. Apr. 9th: A Super Start with the Super Nine For people either on or ready to begin their native plant journey! This presentation provides advice and resources to help with planning, sourcing, selecting and planting these wonderful life-supporting plants. Guests will also meet the “Super Nine,”native plants selected by South Bend Wild Ones for their size, adaptability, beauty, and benefit to wildlife. |

Backyard Birding |

Taught by Jan McGowan, Naturalist from the St. Joseph County Parks April 12, 9-11 am- Birding for Beginners Enjoy the bird life in your yard or garden! Become acquainted with birds common to our gardens, even some of their songs! You will also learn tips and tricks for identifying birds on your own. A bird hike through the Unity Gardens will follow the presentation. Bring binoculars if you have them. Some loaners will be available. May 6, 12-1pm- Birds and Plants Birds and plants, plants and birds: you can’t have one without the other! Discover how essential plants and birds are to one another. Discover ways that you can manage your garden and yardscape to attract and support birds year-round. |
