Update from May 20th, 2025:
The water source is at the gardens now with an easy, manageable hydrant and hoses. Next will be setting a date for Cody Spencer (Caitlin’s husband) and a crew of us to lay pipe to two more taps next to the beds in the garden. It has excellent pressure and each bed can be watered in less than a minute! Need volunteers volunteers to water MWSat, with Monday taken by Tamara. The deer fence is not only up, but secure with the fasteners. We just need to work on a gate/door that will be easy to open and close. All the beds are fully planted with sometimes tomato or pepper seedlings mixed in with the colder crops that will end soon. All beds are flourishing as you can see from the photo (compare it to last month’s and you’ll be amazed! The edge of the woods has been mowed and we are working on getting more native producing fruiting plants in them. We are looking for donations of the following (whether potted plants or ones dug up from your yard): chokeberry, elderberry, pawpaw, serviceberry, plum, hazelnut, persimmon, and witch hazel. All the fruit trees, bushes, vines, and pollinators planted are looking good. Then, lastly, we laid out where the high tunnel will go just outside the garden along the woods and the most we could fit was a 90ft x 30ft section where it will be open/accessible at both ends. Then the remaining piece of the tunnel, 30ft x 30ft, has the possibility of being set up by the existing buildings where the pantry is and having electricity sent to it for fans in the summertime or heaters in the winter! That will be a huge benefit to especially starting our own seedlings and helping neighboring Unity Gardens in Marshall County and elsewhere (future)! We are getting new volunteers and we have started to pick, bag, and distribute ripe produce and talk with the pantry goers as they line up to get groceries.
Needs:
Tools/supplies: Need a small storage shed at both locations. Need tomato wire structure supports. Need drip irrigation supplies.
Volunteers: Todd and I are thinking it would be good for us to go door to door with every church in town and explain what Unity gardens are and how they can be involved. If you are willing to connect us with your church, then please contact me and we can all go together.
A BIG THANKS TO ALL THOSE THAT HAVE VOLUNTEERED TIME ALREADY OR GIVEN TOOLS OR HAVE DONATED SEEDS! DON’T FORGET TO CONTRIBUTE YOUR OWN PRODUCE TO BOTH SHARING TABLES AT EACH LOCATION.
REMEMBER: Contact me at 574-780-6294 or get on the GROUPME app.
